Michigan State University -- one of the largest univesities in the country, with one of the largest university network's in the country -- currently has no Students for Free Culture Chapter.
Jeff Grabill thinks that there is great need for a chapter at MSU, but that there is no point for organization without action. His suggestion is that a chapter could report directly to Dave Gift, MSU Vice Provost of LIbraries, Computing & Technology.
That way, university administration would receive first-hand input from students about their concerns over copyright and fair use issues.
It could also be a place for students to speak about their run-ins with the law. After all, during the 2006-07 school year, about 1,400 MSU students received complaints about their activities on the university network. That way, it might be possible to develop a common understanding of what is legal vs. illegal, acceptable vs. unaccepable, and right vs. wrong.
Students are an important factor in changing the situation. A remix of the book Free Culture by University of Maryland student Ashley Brandt. This is an embodiment of the very idea behind free culture and an example of what is possible when we "rip, mix, and burn" (as Lessig would say) the world around us.
